FJ005: Bad Magic is the latest solo incarnation of Hobart-native Jesse Clark who currently lives in Melbourne. Jesse's other projects have included Howling Gruel, Wendy in the Mountains & the Caves with the Slaves, Hammering the Cramps and Special Students, all of which you need to check out. This self-titled debut is a suite of 16 miniatures for synth and guitar that sound something like the unlikely mix of early John Carpenter film soundtracks, Popol Vuh’s ethereal kosmische music and the work of an unconventional modernist composer, those of the Surrealist Erik Satie perhaps. Or maybe I'm just imagining all that. Anyway, it’s definitely minimalist and definitely very unique. - Tim P.
