about

FJ009: A set of mostly miniature instrumentals for lo-fi synth and occasional guitar, following on from Bad Magic's self-titled debut released on Frustration Jazz late in 2016. Eleven tracks, recorded in 2017, repeating melodies that are sometimes sparingly layered with other elements and often quite beautiful in their own uncanny way. Whilst it could never be accused of overstaying its welcome, Bad Magic II contains a complete suite of songs, hence mini-album rather than EP. These aren’t songs in a conventional sense but there is a kind of abstract narrative at play nonetheless, I can imagine them as the soundtrack to an old video game involving wizards but maybe that’s just me. The one long track here, a relative epic at almost 7 minutes, is a revelation in Jesse Clark’s musical evolution with ambient electronic beats moving just slightly below the main synth line. Throughout there are touches of folk, classical, German kosmische, electronic, film and video game music all blended into something that still manages to be very minimalistic – simple in the best possible way. It sounds, to these ears at least, both uniquely personal and gently enchanting, as if it’s of this world but at the same time otherworldly. - Tim P.
