about

FJ004: Lame & Free is the latest solo offering from Melbourne-based free improv stalwart David Palliser and I'm really excited that this is the first release on Frustration Jazz not directly involving myself. Having been a part of the post-punk era in People With Chairs Up Their Noses, David gave up music for a time to concentrate on his visual arts practice before returning in the 00's as a member of free-music legends The Charles Ives Singers, he also plays in a fantastic trio with Ian Wadley and Stevie Richards. On this disc Palliser presents three tracks, including two live performances, improvised on alto sax along with other brass, woodwind, string and percussion instruments. Sounds vary from the gentler spaces of the first track recorded with just an alto sax to the raucous, Ayler-esque blowing over live looping heard on the long-form track recorded in Berlin. When he's not making noise, David can be found in his art studio and it's his fantastic abstract paintings that grace the covers of this release. - Tim P.
