about

FJ002: A second collection of solo 6-string bouzouki improvisations from yours truly, some of them played on a solid-body electric version of the instrument this time around. The tracks here are for the most part more melodic, albeit dissonant, than those on my first release Long Necked & Blue; I'm tempted to describe the sound as ethnic neo-folk meets dark unschooled jazz but I'm not sure how accurate that really is. The three shorter acoustic pieces, recorded in a different time and place, are the exception in that they have a bit more of a free folk quality about them whilst still maintaining the gloomy atmosphere. On the whole this set is pretty melancholic and probably more than a little claustrophobic too, which I guess says a lot about my state of mind at the time; the title Light Through Amber has nothing to do with a lighter mood as such and actually refers to the origins of the word electricity - from the Greek 'elektron', meaning amber, as in the semi-precious stone. As for the neo-folk influence, I'd say it was already audible in some of my earliest live sets but it's not something I've returned to since making the tracks for this album. One aspect that does connect this release to both my earlier and more recent recordings, is the influence of Greek rebetiko music and whilst these tracks are obviously very different to the original Greek blues, I hope that something of the character of that music still comes across.
