about

FJ011: David Palliser’s second release on Frustration Jazz begins with three courses of freely improvised alto sax abstraction, shadowed by harmony, followed by a fourth extended piece that adds other instrumentation and spontaneous looping to the mix. The appropriately titled opening track Hinges comes out swinging in unconventional ways, non-idiomatic but hinting at some formative free jazz listening experiences. Recorded in Leipzig, Germany in 2015, Fogs is a mellower track but alive with possibility, snippets of melody peaking through the precipitation. Stay Awhile features some more forceful sounds, alternating between low-end overblowing and fishtailing higher-register shronk before relative calm descends towards the end. The longer track Geology Forever, recorded live in 2017 at the belated launch of his Lame & Free album, begins with the solo sax once more but it’s not long before David’s inspired use of the loop pedal comes into play along with other instruments, creating shifting layers of sound with which he interacts as if they’re other players in the space. He uses the various instruments in different combinations from a noisier sax on sax duet, to clarinet meets percussion with global music influences and a beautiful passage with quietly plucked ukulele and vocals that makes me think of Richard Youngs just a little. All of it flows naturally together, extending his music out from the world of free improv and into the realm of idiosyncratic, inventive free folk. - Tim P.
